Westerly Airport Association

One of the primary aims of WAA has been to support and nurture interest in aviation and aerospace education. The primary goal of our fund raising activities is to build the scholarship fund. Since the program began in 2006, over $5000 has been given to deserving students.

2009 recipients
Jennifer Hawthorne – Stonington High School - $1,000.00
David Young - Westerly High School - $1,000.00
Christopher Payne – Embry Riddle Aeronautical Collage – Repeat $500.00

2008 recipients
Craig McCue, North Stonington Class of 2008, planning to attend Johns Hopkins University to study Aerospace Engineering; repeat awards to Steve Coleman and Chris Payne.

2007 recipients
Steve Coleman of South Kingstown, Class of 2007, studying to be a professional pilot, and Chris Payne for his second year, both attending Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

2006 recipients

Keith Spaulding and Chris Payne, Westerly High School Class of 2006, planning to study Aeronautical Engineering at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, FL.

The Westerly Airport Association offers these academic scholarships annually to assist deserving students in their pursuit of higher education in aerospace-related fields. Nominations are encouraged. Students nominated for consideration must:

  • Be a high school graduate or expecting to graduate in the award year.
  • Be accepted to, and planning to attend, an accredited college or university in the following fall.
  • Be planning to pursue an academic major in an aerospace field, such as aviation or airport operations, aeronautical or astronautical engineering, pilot training, aircraft maintenance, etc.
  • Have a demonstrated commitment to a career in this field of study, such as previous flight training, working at an airport, related internships, attending ACE Camp, and the like.
  • Have a recommendation from a teacher, clergy person, guidance counselor, flight instructor, etc..
  • Have an excellent academic record and record of community service.
  • Preference will be given to students whose permanent residence is in southern Rhode Island or southeastern Connecticut.

Candidates will be reviewed and the winners selected by the WAA Scholarship Committee. Awards will be based on the above criteria. Nominations for these awards will be accepted until April 15th of the award year, and may be sent to:
